여름이 되면 늘 찾아오는 것이 바로 태풍(typhoon)입니다. 그래서 여름이 되면 태풍 때문에 피해를 입은 지역이 있다는 뉴스를 많이 접하게 됩니다. 오늘 대화에서도 Sarah와 Peter가 한국에서 있었던 지난 태풍의 피해에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다. 태풍과 함께 전 지역이 열대성 폭우로 잠겼다(The whole area was deluged by tropical rains.)고 말하고 있습니다.


Sarah : The last typhoon we had here in Korea was the worst of the year.

Peter : I know. My grandfather is a farmer in the south and the typhoon passed directly across his town.
 Sarah : It must have been very badly battered. The winds were very strong.
 Peter : Yes, but it wasn't just the winds. The whole area was deluged by tropical rains.
 Sarah : Is he okay?
 Peter : Yeah, but all of his crops were ruined. So he'll need a lot of help to recover from all the damage.
batter는 '때려 부수다, 강타하다'라는 의미의 동사로 위의 대화에서 battered는 태풍에 의해 '심한 타격을 받다'정도로 해석하면 됩니다.

송아~ 어제 회의에서 무슨 심각한 문제라도 있었어?

W : Yes. Actually we've been working on a quite important contract with China but we didn't make it after all. I feel like it was my fault.
응.. 사실은 중국과 꽤 중요한 계약을 진행하고 있었는데 결국 성공하지 못했어. 내 잘못인 것 같아.

M : Sorry to hear that. Don't be too hard on yourself. It is not good for your health.
저런.. 너무 자책하지 말아~ 건강에 안좋아~

W : I know. But as a team leader, I still feel responsible for the failure.
알아.. 하지만 팀장으로서 계약을 실패한것에 대해 아직까지 책임을 느껴요

집이나 자동차 등을 구입할 때는, 액수 크기 때문에 먼저 계약금(deposit0이라는 것을 내고 계약을 한 후 나중에 잔액을 치르게 되는데, 이 때 '계약금으로 300달러를 내겠다'는 표현은 I'll pay 300 dollars deposit이라고 하면 됩니다. 오늘의 대화에서는 마음에 든 집을 발견한 Mark가 부동산 중개인과 집을 계약하는 것에 관해 이야기하고 있습니다.



Mark : I really love this place. Can I come back this evening and make a final decision?

Real estate agent : If you're interested, you'd better act quickly. An apartment like this doesn't stay vacant for long.
Mark : Hmm... Okay! I'll sign the contract now.
Real estate agent : Good. You won't regret this.
Mark : I'll pay 300 dollars deposit. Is that enough? And when can I move in?
Real estate agent : 300 dollars is okay. We need three days to inspect and clean this apartment. You can move in any time after that.

You'd betters는 You had better의 줄인 말로 뒤에 동사 원형을 써서 '~하는 게 좋다'는 의미가 됩니다. move에는 '이사하다'라는 뜻이 있는데 '~에 이사 들어가다'라고 할 때는 move in, '~에서 이사 나오다'라고 할 때는 move out으로 표현합니다.

여러분은 포트폴리오(portfolio)에 대해 알고 계신가요? 이것은 보통 미술가나 건축가들이 자신이 만든 작품을 모아놓은 것을 일컫는 말인데요. 요즘에는 예술 분야 뿐만 아니라, 인문 분야의 작업을 가지신 분들도 자신의 능력과 경력을 보여주기 위해 포트폴리오를 갖고 계신 분들도 있습니다. 오늘 대화에서는 구직 활동을 시작하기 전에 Sam이 포트폴리오를 만들고 있다(Sam is working on his career portfolio)고 합니다.



Cindy : How is your job search going?

Sam : I haven't started yet. I'm still working on my career portfolio.
Cindy : What is it? Is that similar to a resume or C.V?
Sam : It is. but it's much more detailed. It will give potential employers the complete picture of my qualifications, experiences and abilities.
Cindy : That will be quite a folder.
